Trend Setting Baby Styles for Twenty Ten, Does it Itch?

If fashion mimics our culture, what does the dawn of a new decade bring? From scouring the designer showrooms in trendy Los Angeles, to talking with our on-line customers across America, we made some interesting parallels.

Parents have a new found social awareness, and are optimistic for what the future holds for their children. They continue to want the "best" for their baby, but what's changing is what they consider "best".

The new "best" is unique baby clothes that are free-trade, sweat shop free, preferably made in the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Europe or Australia. And "best" is even better, if it's eco-friendly, made from sustainable fabrics, organics and bamboo. Long gone are the drab scratchy organic wools of yesteryear. The new generation fabrics are full of color and are luxuriously soft for baby's delicate skin.

Styles are preciously classic yet relaxed as we emerge from recession. Warm pinks and sky blues are modern again with argyle and kimono side ties. Colorful whimsy prints are seen on traditional baby rompers. Think orange owls, rich chocolate trims, turquoise guitars and animal prints: Little girl dresses take their inspiration from the storybooks of renaissance princesses and a midsummer's night dream. Celebrity favorites are California designers Luna Luna Copenhagen, Mad Sky Kids and Toni Tierney Designs. Miraculously, they have managed to keep their prices at bay, while maintaining high quality and excellent work conditions for their sewers.

Will the twenty tens be as fashion iconic as were the 60's and 70's? Then again, when all is said and done, every generation laughs at the old fashions and follows the new; and babies base most of their fashion taste on what doesn't itch!

Back to School Madness

I've been dreading this post because I'm afraid I might ruin this D-designed pattern, D as in the initial of Daphne, Woohoo. Yesterday was the official Back-to-School day here in Taiwan after the long hot summer holidays. From stationeries to shoes, swimsuits to bedsheets, it is ironic that almost everything is on sales for this Back-to-school thingy. My kiddo are not yet at the age for school, none the less I still love sales. For any reason, it makes my purse feels bigger. I bought like 3 pairs of shoes for Ethan, all at bigger sizes, this is so called future planning. School bags are crazily on sales, too. There are Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Winnie the Pooh, Diego, Dora the Explorer, some Japanese girlish icons, all fully equipped with multi-functions. Oh I'm almost convinced to buy one of Mickey for Ethan. However so, Ethan was pretty content with his mommy-made one of his own backpack that he insisted he doesn't need another Mickey. To add up the spice of my accomplishment, I even saw a kid in the mall dragging his mom asking for my backpack only to learn that this item is money-can't-buy.

I believe to appreciate authenticity, you'll need to understand how to create one in the first place. Typically me. You know, you can always find a reason to be a proud mom, or simply a proud lady. Mine is the backpack that I designed and made for my kiddo. Everything is on sales, everything goes, my love stays.

P.S.: check out our authentic bargains at your doorstep, be sure to pop back to us if you have any question, any at all. Happy Back-to-School!

Mommy Who Does It All~Kid's Cap

I always wonder one thing, why a mom who used to work as a sewing machine operator in garment factory has never taught me sewing techniques as simple as tying a knot? And I always envy my best friend for having a wonderful mom who can sew simply everything out from scratch. So it happens that a mom like mine, although who used to work part-timely in garment factory, doesn't know much about sewing. Being a mom of my own 2 kids now, I decided to become the latter--my best friend's mom as a prototype.

I used to think that my hands are so "cacat" that I could tie my fingers up when tying a knot. Oh bugger, after giving birth to 2 babies, I figure nothing can be harder. And so it is, sewing is as easy as a piece of cake, tho I have not started learning baking, just yet. With some help from online paper patterns and teaching, your kids will also treat you as a super heroine! Hahaha!

As a super-mom-to-be, you need to download the paper patterns from here. It's in Japanese characters, but we'll only need the patterns, so no worries if you don't understand Nihon. Coz I don't. But it's a bonus that you do too, you can directly learn the making of the kid's cap here step by step.

Cut out the patterns from the fabrics. Remember to leave a 5mm seam shares on the each side of the fabrics.

For the brims of the hat, I added a layer of iron-on fabric to strengthen the brims.

Some elastic is needed for adjusting the head size.

For the beginning, sew up one side of the crown rims with both patches facing front to front.

When all 6 patches are stitched together, remember to iron the seam shares flat to avoid the hat from being bulgy when stiching together.

Leave a 5mms of seams share folding inward. Then stitch the 56cms rims to the crown, overlapping itself for around 1cm, cut away extra fabrics. Then put the 2 parts back to back, stictch the elastic at the back of the cap.

For the brim, after stitching the outer rim of it, cut the seam shares into zig-zag pattern before turning it inside out.

Machine stitch around the edge of the brim. Pin the brim to the crown rims before finishing up.

See, free and easy, you can finish them in an afternoon.
And you can have your admirer worshipping your creation like this.

Daphne's Mumbles

Do you live far from your old folks? When was the last time you talked to your siblings? Do you remember the last time you look them in the eyes? Did you ever tell them you love them?

I live apart from my folks as far as 3,243 Kms, if not more. Their offsprings are all around the globe, without exaggerating, North America, The Island of Formosa, and the heart of the Peninsular. At the ages of 50+, they learn to manipulate their biggest nightmare in order to talk to me and kids "face to face" on msn. Whereas, our sista reunions always happen on our favorite venue, msn, again. Pretty witty lucky tho, folks came for us last month and had a meaningful trip down south of Formosa Island, before the furious Morakot swept away the happiness of thousands of family.

We're always busy, we always have more important things await. The globe never stop turning, and time never waits. I know it's pretty gauwet, but I love you, papa mama! I miss you dowseng, bigong and oushui! I'm coming back in November, wait for me!

Quieter Zzzzz Nights for Toddlers

(Above is an image from: www.realsimple.com)
If your child wakes up screaming inconsolably an hour or two after dozing off, she might be having night terrors.

Kids as young as 18 months can suffer from this unique sleep disorder that causes partial arousals from sleep, usually accompanied by piercing cries, says a new study in Pediatrics. Night terrors, which experts had thought primarily affected preschoolers, may be triggered by sleep deprivation, fever, and certain medicines. The researchers found that genetics play a role too. Fortunately, half of the kids in the study who had terrors at 18 months grew out of them by 30 months. While the episodes can be scary for you, your child won't remember a thing. Don't touch or talk to him during a terror - it can make it last longer, says Parents advisor and sleep expert Jodi Mindell, Ph.D. Just stay in his room until it's over to be sure he doesnt bolt up and injure himself.

BFF tips:

To make your child sleep even more soundly, put on a versatile onesie so that it covers his or her stomach during zzzz. BFF has the perfect PJs for your toddlers!

Kizclub--My Fav. English Site For Preschoolers

Today I'm going to share one of my favorite English educational site for kiddos to our dearest BFFs--Kizclub. As a previous English tutor to preschoolers, I used to have very high demand for English worksheets and teaching ideas. Thanks goodness I had found this darling website with really useful props and printout games for preschoolers. Now being a full-time mommy, this site is helping me alot by filling up my Ethan's spare time, too! Take a look at it and you'll know why.

Here's one of the many stuffs we had printed out for Ethan.
He particularly loves this Alphabets puzzle set. All I did was printed out the black and white copies to have him color the pieces of letters for me. This could keep him busy one whole afternoon. Cut the pieces out yourself or have your kid cut them, if you're confident with their scissoring skills. Laminate them if you wish them to last longer. Lastly, cut out the laminated pieces and ta-dah. You could keep him busy another one whole afternoon, and educational!

~BABYLEGS GIVEAWAY~CLOSED

I'm excited to announce our next giveaway...
BABYLEGS

If any of you out there have not tried these smart, simple, and adorable leggings on your little ones... you are missing out!

I have used them so much on my little man Merrick(18 mos), since the time he was born. When he was a newborn, it was so nice because I was always changing his diaper, so I would put him in a onesie and add the Babylegs so his tiny legs would stay warm. This way I didn't have to worry about putting pants back on every 10 minutes after a diaper change, lol. (I know some of you know what I'm talkin' about!)

Even as he grew older, we used Babylegs. When he started crawling they helped protect his little knee's, when he started walking- well, they just looked too cute!
I have really enjoyed being able to throw a plain old onesie on him (cause he's going to stain it anyway, lol) and spice it up with a really adorable pair of Babylegs.

What's great about Babylegs is that they are "one size fits all", so your baby/toddler/child can wear them for years! My Lily(5) and Macy(4) wear them under dresses that are maybe getting too short, with jean skirts and flip flops, and to church to keep their legs warm. They can be worn on the arms too.

Ok, so here's the deal... To enter the contest you must check out La Bebe Boutique @ www.LaBebeBoutique.com and browse all the Babylegs under the "Baby" category. Come back and comment on your favorite pair, and you will be entered in the contest. It's as easy as that.
CONTEST ENDS AT MIDNIGHT on Sunday, May 31st!

Please make sure to LEAVE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS! Also, if you would like to have a better chance at winning your free pair of Babylegs you can have extra entries by doing one or more of the following:
